Nothing conjures the word vacation like a long stretch of sandy beach. But if you think that means spending big bucks, think again. Many of the best beach vacations are surprisingly affordable. From inexpensive family vacation destinations filled with amusement parks to romantic small towns perfect for long walks on the sand and fun vacation spots for singles, there are plenty of cheap beach vacation ideas in the United States—if you know where to look.

1. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida

Sure, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach are popular destinations in Florida, but this lesser-known beach town is far more affordable. It's hidden on Florida's east coast, tucked between Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, and visiting makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. While in town, be sure to take a stroll down the beach pavilion to the pier. You can walk through Anglin's Square, which is filled with cafes, restaurants, and gelato shops — visit at night to enjoy the scene.

2. Ambergris Caye, Belize

The small country of Belize is one of the most affordable destinations in Central America, and it has some beautiful beaches just waiting to be explored. Ambergris Caye is the largest island that’s part of Belize and a favorite destination among divers. One of the largest coral reef systems is located near the island, which is a huge selling point for divers and snorkelers. The vibe here is very relaxing and laid back in the town of San Pedro, and there are many budget-friendly hotels and restaurants here to indulge a bit without going broke.

3. Cambria, California

The California coast may not come immediately to mind when you think of budget-friendly beach vacation towns, but it’s actually home to plenty of affordable gems, including the captivating seaside village of Cambria. Located in San Luis Obispo County along the scenic California Highway 1 Discovery Route, Cambria is one of the best-kept secrets on the Pacific Coast. The town boasts architecture dating back to the late 1800s and Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, a mile-long, ADA-accessible path along the beach.

4. Panama

If you are looking for an exotic beach vacation, Panama is a far more affordable option than other tropical destinations. If you visit during the offseason, you can get serious deals on flights and hotels. While you're here, explore the famous Panama Canal and the nearby Miraflores Visitor Center, which has a four-story museum and a view of the locks where ships pass. Wander around Panama's historic district, called Casco Viejo, which has a history that goes back to the 1600s.

5. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Not all beach trips have to be about bikinis and sunbathing, and Oregon’s stunning beaches prove that beach vacations can go beyond the stereotypes. You’ll only need to drive about an hour and a half from Portland to reach this area, but you’ll feel like you’re a world away. Haystack Rock is the iconic natural landmark here that you’ll see protruding from the ocean a couple of hundred feet from the surface. The route to get here highlights stunning views of the coastline, so pull over a couple of times to snap photos of the scenery along the way. Ecola State Park nearby is great for hiking, biking, and flying a kite.
